Dear John,
Summer is all too short in Alberta and for sure we want to make the most of it! It is so much easier to be active in the summer time with gardening and yard work to be done; longer days give us a few more hours to get that walk or a run in. Cycling, golf and hiking are also great pastimes in the summer for many of us! However there are many temptations in the summer that we can indulge in that can lead us astray when it comes to losing those layers of body fat we accumulated over the winter months.
So let's start MONDAY...The 10 DAY CHALLENGE! Details at the bottom of this newsletter. And smack dab in the middle of this we have our EVENING OF BEAUTY PERKS FOR SUMMER! Don't miss out reading  the Ageless EFFEX section! You will be getting your summer off to an awesome start!

Read on for some tips to help you stay lean this summer while enjoying the flavours of summer.
And HEY would you pretty please forward this email to any of your awesome friends who might enjoy a bit of info from a friendly fitness studio? We could use some help in getting out to our community. Many thanks to you!

Summer Sins!

BBQs – juicy steaks and barbeque sauces, rich creamy salads are crammed with calories and fat. The first tip is to downsize your portions - you just don’t need a 16 oz of steak in one sitting.  Secondly, choose lean cuts of meat for the BBQ – pork tenderloin, extra lean ground beef or turkey for burgers, and choose chicken and fish more often over that     T-bone.  Use vinaigrette dressings for salads instead of creamy choices. Substitute plain yogurt for sour cream on that baked potatoes and ditch the bacon bits in favor of chives and green onions. Half of your plate should be filled with vegetables and only a quarter with starches (rice, potatoes, pasta) and a quarter for protein (meats, etc.). Oh and don’t forget to use a smaller plate!

Ice Creams - large Blizzards from DQ can be anywhere from 700 – 1450 calories with as much as 64 g fat (up to 6 g can be the dreaded trans fat) depending on the flavor. The smalls’ are 500 - 700 calories and   17 g of fat. Compare this with a small dipped cone at 330 calories and 15 g of fat (trans fat free). A no sugar dilly bar is 190 calories with    13 g fat. The best choices at DQ are the fudge bar at just 50 calories and the vanilla orange bar 60 calories, both have 0 g fat and 4 g of sugar. Beware the arctic chillers! They average about 48 g of sugar and that’s all you need for the whole day! Sundaes from Baskins and Robbins are between 500 – 600 calories per serving. Better choices here include the Yogurt Gone Crazy at 120 - 150 calories, 24 g of sugar and 4 - 5 g protein. Try a  small Yogen Fruz  probiotic, low fat chocolate or non-fat vanilla for 120 calories and 4 g of protein, 20 g sugar. Add in some frozen fruit for  flavor for a few extra calories and nutrition.

Iced Drinks - iced cappuccinos from coffee shops are loaded with fat and calories. A Tim Horton’s medium cream iced cappuccino serves up 350 calories with 15 g fat, choose one made with milk and reduce your calories to 220 calories and just 2 g fat. Better still downsize to a small milk iced cap for 150 calories and only 1.5 g of fat.

A 16 oz iced coffee mocha whip from Starbucks gives you 320 calories and 17 g of fat, ditch the whip and get 200 calories and 6g fat. The worst choice is the iced white chocolate mocha whip (16 oz) from Starbucks which packs a whopping 450 calories and 20 g fat! Select an iced americano which is a mere 15 calories and no fat (even if you add some cream it’s still a better calorie choice).

Alcohol - what’s your beverage of choice at the summer BBQ- a cold beer, a slushy Margarita, glass of wine? A drink can be such an enjoyable and natural accompaniment that we forget about the calories. However calories from alcohol quickly add up and as we don’t consider it food we don’t eat less to compensate - in fact alcohol increases your appetite so you’re more likely to consume more food. Our advice is to consume alcohol very sparingly. Opt for wine spritzers (half a serving of wine filled with soda water or sparkling water) or limit yourself to one glass of your favorite and forego dessert in favor of a drink.

12 oz beer: 150 calories

Light 12 oz beer: 116 calories

5 oz white wine: 110 calories

5 oz red wine: 115 calories

Rum and Coke: 182 (133 if use diet coke)

Frozen Margarita: 246 calories

Long Island Iced Tea: 275 calories

Bellini: 220 calories

By the way just in case you thought you were getting nutrition by adding fruit to your cocktails consider that alcohol is a diuretic so any goodness added by the fruit gets flushed right through your system.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Soft Smooth Skin
It is not just for preventing heart disease - dermatologists are recommending them to help heal dry skin and the rough, red, scaly patches of psoriasis and eczema. "Countless studies show that increasing the consumption of omega-e oils improves these conditions," says Baumann. They are crucial to skin health as they are an intergral part of the membranes that surround our skin cells, these essential fats - which must be obtained from diet or supplements are a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin supple.

They also aid in the production of hormones that improve skin texture and help combat the inflammatory damage from free radicals. Those are the nasty ones that cause wrinkles and blotchiness. Sun-sensitive people may even be less prone to burning after regular use. You should try to eat fish such as salmon, mackerel, and albacore tuna at least twice a week to improve your skin's condition.
